First joint Summer Academy in Weltenburg

The first joint Summer Academy of all RIGeL sections took place in the monastery of Weltenburg from the 30th of June until the 2nd of July. 36 PhD students participated in the Summer Academy, where we had the opportunity to get an overview of the different groups of the CBB, Biomedicine, Neurobiology and MEE sections, exchange data and get new inputs and ideas for our projects.

On the first day the Summer Academy started with a Teambuilding Event on “Sience in Team” with small challenging tasks, in order to improve our capacity of teamwork. Due to the rainy weather on Thursday the first part of the team event took place in the large conference room, where 5 teams of 6-7 PhD students tried to make knots on a rope without letting go of the rope, build specific shapes from wooden planks in a very short time etc. As the rain has stopped in the afternoon, the team event could be continued outside until dinner.

After dinner the scientific program got started with the guest talk of Dr. Guido Grossmann from the Centre for Organismal Studies Heidelberg on “Intercellular communication during environmental sensing and developmental plasticity”. Afterwards, we had a get-together evening with drinks and nice conversations.

In the second and third day of the Summer Academy PhD students presented their projects with wide-ranging topics during poster session as well as talk sessions. The tight, but very interesting program with 18 poster presentations and 19 talks has been complemented by the method lecture of the company GE Healthcare. They gave us insights into the new techniques of 3D-SIM microscopy applications.

The Summer School was concluded with couple of prizes awarded to the most outstanding poster and talk. The best talk was presented by Alexandra Perras from the CBB section about “Defining the boarders of extreme life: The study of microbial communities and their settings gives insights into Mars analogue life”. The best poster prize has been awarded to Catarina Quintanova from the Biomed section for her poster titled “Expression and localization of KCNJ16 and functional consequences of the rare KCNJ16 variant p.R35Q”. In order to practice the underestimated skill to ask questions, there was a third prize category: The Questioner. Six participants of the Summer Academy who asked the most of the scientific questions have been awarded with the Questioner Prize.

In summary, it was a relaxed but effective Summer Academy with lots of opportunities for networking and broadening the scientific horizon by getting to know PhD students of other sections better. The coffee and lunch breaks in between as well as two get-together evenings with snacks and drinks provided us with many opportunities to discuss scientific problems and socialize. We look forward to the next Summer Academy 2017!
